Project: ‘Media, Minorities and Migration’

Duration: October 2017 – October 2020
Project Partners: Minority Rights Group Europe (MRGE) – the project’s leader, based in Hungary; Minority Rights Group International (MRGI), UK; Gender Project for Bulgaria Foundation (GPF), Bulgaria; Cracow University of Economics, Poland and the Human Rights League, Slovakia

What is the aim of the project?
We aim at raising EU public awareness of the interconnections between the EU and developing countries on issues concerning poverty, migration and minority exclusion. Specifically, the project’s aim is to improve media coverage of development by strengthening the capacity of journalists, journalism students and students from social sciences and humanities interested in journalism through non-formal education opportunities to report sensitively on poverty, migration and minority issues.

What are we doing?
Activity 1: The project will involve creating 8-week online course in English language on development, minorities and migration for 200 journalists, journalism (or social sciences) students and media officers working in national development platforms or NGOs (50 from Poland)

The course will be supported by two tutors, supervising approximately 25 participants each. They will be expected to engage with each participant for half an hour every fortnight, via Skype or through a live online chat facility. Participants will be expected to devote 2-3 hours every week towards reading, doing their own research, completing the quizzes and tests, and doing the assignments. Every fortnight, they will have a half-hour conversation (or live chat) with their tutor. It is expected that successful participants will need to devote a total of between 18 and 25 hours to the course. The discussion forum and the webinars will enhance both the interactive nature of the course and create a valuable group spirit among the participants.

Activity 2: Selected journalism students graduates of online training will be given an opportunity to do 1-month paid internships in the national media outlets
Cracow University of Economics will facilitate 20 journalism students from Poland, graduates of the online course, to do on one-month internships at national media outlets. Selection will primarily be based on the level and quality of applicants’ participation in the online training course. In their applications, they will be asked how they plan to use their internships, and to demonstrate competence and interest in development journalism. Writing samples of published or unpublished media pieces will be required to test their research and writing skill.
Activity 3: 7-day face-to-face training and site visits for 90 journalists and journalism students to urgent frontline EU arrival points and to Africa
Participants in the online training who have demonstrated the most ability, potential and commitment will be offered the possibility to attend 7 day trips encompassing face-to-face training events (2 days) and study visits to frontline EU arrival points in Italy and Greece (and possibly Spain) and to countries of origin in Africa (5 days). Priority will be given to those participants who have not had an opportunity to live or travel extensively, especially in developing countries. Participants will be selected with a view to providing a good geographic spread across the target countries as well as gender balance.
Participation in the study visits will enhance participants’ confidence to carry out additional visits on their own, and more generally to research and publish stories on complex issues relating to development and migration. The visits will help the participants break down stereotypes and understand the realities confronting migrants arriving at the EU’s external borders, and communities of origin and why their members are migrating. Furthermore, given that a key obstacle for media outlets in the target countries is lack of resources for in-depth field reporting, the study visits will provide participants with opportunities to interview firsthand and identify personal stories. Participants will also build networks of contacts on the ground, which will remain a useful asset for their professional development.
Activity 4: 20 Stipends to most active online trainees for investigative reporting projects
The project will offer stipends or bursaries of up to €1,600 to 20 successful participants to conduct in-depth reporting on issues relating to development, migration and minorities. Smaller amounts will be granted to those who choose to apply for funds to stay on in the same locations as the study visits (Act 3) to conduct further in-depth reporting, whereas the upper amount will allow those who are successful to plan their own independent trips. The grants contribute towards travel costs, accommodation, insurance, per diems, etc. It will not be used as fees or salaries.
Activity 5: National high-profile roundtables on development journalism for senior media professionals
Activity 6: Annual editorial awards for outstanding development journalism
Two annual prizes per target country will be awarded to journalists who have published outstanding pieces of development journalism. A call will be issues for journalists in the target EU countries to submit excellent examples of published articles (print or online), or broadcast pieces of development journalism. Photo-stories will also be eligible.
Activity 7: International high-profile roundtables on development journalism for senior media professionals
The university journalism professors and the senior editors most active and engaged in the national roundtables and in supporting the Action in the other ways identified (disseminating the call for applicants to the online course, providing internships etc.) will be invited to attend international high-profile roundtables on development journalism.
Activity 8: Media information resources on development, minorities and migration: 3 global reports on minorities and migration and 1 best practice report on minority-sensitive development journalism
Activity 9: Documentary films and online materials - Visual materials, focusing on issues concerning development, minorities & migration

Inauguracja Projektu FAME realizowanego w ramach WEiSM

W bieżącym roku akademickim zainaugurowano projekt FAME - Family Business Sustainability and Growth, realizowany w ramach ERASMUS+ STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP (nr umowy 2016-1-HU01-KA203-022930). Projekt FAME realizowany jest przez przez konsorcjum trzech uniwersytetów: Budapest Business School, Leeds Beckett University oraz Uniwersytet Ekonomiczny w Krakowie, wspierane przez think-tank CEPOR, konfederację pracodawców Business Hungary oraz MAC-Team (stowarzyszenie non-profit).

Celem projektu jest zbadanie wyzwań w zakresie zrównoważonego rozwoju, stojących przed firmami rodzinnymi z sektora małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw, a następnie opracowanie materiałów dydaktycznych dla kursów prowadzonych na 2 roku studiów magisterskich w zakresie przedsiębiorczości rodzinnej. Materiały te będą opracowywane we współpracy środowiska akademickiego z przedsiębiorcami, organizacjami pracodawców i z ekspertami z zakresu przedsiębiorczości.
